SEMPORNA: The problems of rural Sabah schools, including housing for teachers, will be resolved as soon as possible, said Education Deputy Minister Dr Puad Zarkashi.
He said this needed to be done not just to provide education in comfort and in a conducive atmosphere for teachers but also to fulfill the government’s mission to develop human potential.
“In the four days I have been in Sabah, including in Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Semporna and Tawau I have seen various problems faced by the rural schools. The most glaring is that of school rooms. There are rooms that are dilapidated and cannot be used and teachers’ houses are in sad shape.

“As such I was shocked to see that some teachers’ houses did not even have pillows and they used their bags as pillows,” Dr Puad told Bernama after visiting Sekolah Pusat SK Bum-Bum and SMK Bum-Bum on Pulau Bum-Bum near here.
According to Dr Puad the problems would be highlighted to ministry officials for resolution as most of matters were included in the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
He said among reasons for the delay in some projects were rising costs and the shifting of budgets for other projects.
“I will discuss this with the deputy prime minister who is also the education minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, as to how we can solve these matters,” Dr Puad said, adding that if the government was to provide good education to students there was no other choice but to provide a comfortable environment for students and teachers.
Earlier when speaking at Sekolah Pusat SK Bum-Bum, Dr Puad said he encouraged teachers to communicate directly with the education ministry, including writing personally to him, on the problems they faced.
He said in this way there would be teamwork between schools and the ministry to achieve the education mission of the country.
“I must solve the problems as if they are allowed to fester it will disturb our focus and motivation to educate. As such I want to take the step to encourage a more open attitude by encouraging teachers to contact me directly. I will try to help them,” he said.
Dr Puad said he did not want to be a leader who did not know what was happening at the schools’ level.
